Solution Sheet 4 Posted

I posted Solution Sheet 4 a week ago. (I forgot to mention it here.) I have just corrected a small typo in it and added a couple of small comments. I also fixed some of the grammatical issues, but that is less important.

Update 2 (4/23/12): The day, time, and place of Marta's sessions have been moved to remove a conflict with B8a. They are now Mondays weeks 2,3,5 in DHSR1: 11 am - 1 pm (weeks 2 and 3), 11 am - noon (week 5).

Update 3 (4/24/12:) Wonjung Lee will also run 5 hours worth of consultation. They will take place in SGSR1. They will take place on Fridays from 10 - 11 in week 2 and from 10-12 in weeks 3 and 4. [Note: I incorrectly listed 11-12 for week 2. It is 10-11.]

Timing for the 4th Class of My B8b class

The 4th class for the B8b class for which I am a tutor will take place on Tuesday of week 1 at 10:00 - 11:30 am in SGSR1.

New Paper on the Chaotic Water Wheel

I didn't have time to look before lecture this morning, but a new paper was posted on the arXiv today about the chaotic waterwheel. It describes a new experimental implementation of it. This just goes to show you that we're discussing active research in this course!

I forgot to announce it here, but I posted solution sheet 2 last week.

Solution Sheet 1 Posted

I have posted solution sheet 1.

Update (2/04/12): I have posted an updated version of the solutions with some small typos corrected. Note, for example, that the Figure 6 caption is now present (which should make things clearer when it comes to the trapping region --- depicted in Figure 7 --- for that problem).

Matlab Class

The Matlab Class will be Tuesday, Week 4, 5 - 6:30 pm in L1 in the MI. Bring a laptop with Matlab installed.

Update (2/3/12)> Download the file called "zygalakis.zip" from the course materials website. This is code collected (and, in some cases, also written) by Kostas Zygalakis, who was a class tutor for Math B8b when I have taught it in the past.

Welcome to the HT 2012 version of Nonlinear Systems

The lectures for this course are Mondays at 4pm and Thursdays at 11am in room L1.

I have now posted the typed lecture notes and homework sheets for HT 2012. I corrected one typo in the 2nd document of the lecture notes, but otherwise everything is the same as last year.

There will be five sets of classes:

I will teach [class 1] one set of classes in odd weeks (weeks 3,5,7) Friday 2:00 - 3:30 pm in DHSR3. This class will also meet in week 1 of TT, but the time and place cannot be specified until just before TT starts. The TA for this class will be Sofia Piltz.

Wonjung Lee will teach [class 2] a set of classes in even weeks (2,4,6,8) Friday 2:00 - 3:30 pm in DHSR3. The TA for that class will be Andrey Melnik.

Ruth Baker will teach two sets of classes. One of them [class 3] will be DHSR3, Weeks 3,5,7,8, Mondays, 9:30 - 11 am. The other [class 4] will be DHSR3, Weeks 3,5,7,8, Fridays, 3:30 - 5 pm. The TA for class 3 is Marta Sarzynska and the TA for class 4 is Sofia Piltz.

Margarita Schlackow will teach [class 5] the final set of classes. It will meet in even weeks (2,4,6,8) Friday 10:00 - 11:30 am in DHSR2. The TA will be Marta Sarzynska.

Friday classes in week N will have homework due at 10:00 am on Wednesday of week N. The Monday class in week N will have homework due at 10:00 am on Friday of week N - 1. Boxes will magically appear in the basement of the Mathematical Institute.

Which Extra Topic(s)?

This year, it looks like there will be some time in the last couple of lectures to cover some 'extra topics', which can in principle differ from year to year.

If there are any in which any of you have particular interest, please either comment here or drop me a line.

I haven't yet made these lectures, so let me know what interests you.

Matlab Class

Kostas Zygalakis will be holding a class on Matlab in Week 3.

It will take place in room L2 in the Mathematical Institute on Friday (4 Feb) from 4:30 - 6 pm. It will be necessary bring laptops on which Matlab is installed.

Matlab Code on MI Website for B8b

I have now specified that the Matlab guide for B8b is from an old version of the course (taught by someone else). I have now made the code referenced therein publicly available in case you find it helpful, but of course it is necessarily user-beware because somebody else wrote this code. The code is from an old version of the course and uses different notation, etc.

Welcome to Nonlinear Systems (HT 2011)

Here is lots of relevant information for the HT 2011 iteration of the Nonlinear Systems course (Maths B8b).

Handwritten lecture notes from HT 2010 are available both here and at the site maintained by the Mathematical Institute. Typed versions of the lecture notes are available at the latter site. Note that I will sometimes say things in lectures that aren't in the other notes, so it is useful to come. (I have been known, for example, to hint at things that I think are good problems to ask.)

The mock exam (plus solutions) that I made in 2010 is posted. I suggest taking that as a practice exam when you're studying for the exam. There will ultimately be a revision session to go over those questions, so you'll want to take this under Examination conditions (though you don't need to wear sub fusc).

I have already posted the 4 problem sheets for the course.

Lecture times for HT 2011: M, W: 11:00 am - noon, MI, L1

The tutors are Mason Porter (2 classes), Konstantinos Zygalakis (2 classes), and Chong Luo (1 class). The TAs are Sofia Piltz (2 classes), Alhaji Cherif (2 classes), and Matt Webber (1 class).

There will be 5 classes:

1. Mason + Alhaji, even weeks (2,4,6,8); Thursday 10:30-12, DHSR2

2. Mason + Sofia, odd weeks (3,5,7,1); Thursday 10:30-12, DHSR2 (+ we'll see for TT 1)

3. Kostas + Alhaji, even (2,4,6,8); Fridays 10:30 - noon, DHSR3

4. Kostas + Sofia, odd (3,5,7,1); Fridays 10:30 - noon, DHSR3 in weeks 3 and 5, L3 in week 7 (+ we'll see for TT 1)

5. Chong + Matt, odd (3,5,7,1); Mondays 2 - 3:30 pm, DHSR1 in weeks 3 and 5, DHSR3 in week 7 (+ we'll see for TT 1)

There will also be a special classe (given by Kostas) to provide an introduction to Matlab. The timing for this still needs to be determined, but there will likely be two duplicate sessions in week 3. In the meantime, please download Matlab by following relevant links on the Mathematical Institute website.

Homework due times are as follows: Assignments for Thursday and Friday classes are due Mondays at 1pm, and assignments for the Monday class are due Thursdays at 1pm. Use the box for your section that has been placed in the basement of the Mathematical Institute.

Let me know if I missed anything.
